Role and responsibilities now.
Kaliel is working on several big cases through the KalielGold firm, a leader in high-stakes class action litigation in federal and state courts. In the firm's history, settlements and verdicts have been worth hundreds of millions of dollars and have included big wins against predatory financial practices.
The firm Kaliel Gold, based in Washington, D.C., also focuses on civil actions related to overdraft fees, consumer protections, personal injury, medical malpractice, insurance fraud, bank fraud, false advertising, and much more.
History of Work
Jeffrey Kaliel served in the U.S. Army before he went to law school and started his successful law practice. He worked his way up to the rank of Staff Sergeant and got trained in airborne and mountain warfare. In 2003, he served in Iraq during the second Iraq war.
Kaliel was in the Honors Program at the Department of Homeland Security and worked in the agency's Appellate Litigation Section. He also helped with an internal investigation of the department's response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which was done to get ready for a congressional investigation. He was also a special U.S. Attorney in California's Southern District, focusing on crimes near the U.S. border.
History in school and law school
Kaliel got his bachelor's degree in political science from Amherst College in 2000. He got a degree with honors from the university and studied philosophy for a year at Cambridge University in England. He chose Yale Law for law school, and in 2005 he got his law degree.
Skills and Experience in the Workplace
During his career, Kaliel has been in charge of several high-profile and important legal cases. He has led class counsel in important state and national class action lawsuits, won many contest class certification motions, defended dispositive motions, and used several data-intensive, high-tech, and scientific methods and processes in discovery and beyond. He has worked with economists, IT experts, and engineers to make detailed models that show the damages in cases. During high-stakes litigation, it's important to show information dynamically, and Kaliel has shown that she can connect and explain these points.
Jeff Kaliel is very passionate about fighting against predatory financial firms and services and the real-world problems they cause for a lot of people. On his list of cases right now are a lot of lawsuits against financial services companies and other related businesses that do predatory lending. He also fights against financial services that try to get the few dollars the poorest people in America have. Few low-cost, high-quality services are available to this low-income group.
As a consumer advocate, you need to know how to use legal arguments to explain the technical merits of a case. You also need to have the same level of financial knowledge as other people in the field, but you need to be able to explain it in a way that people can understand.
Lawsuits about consumer safety and protection are a lot alike. Laws that protect consumers from a wide range of problems are complicated, different, and sometimes too many to keep track of. Finding the best legal arguments for a case requires a lot of research and careful attention to detail. From there, things get more complicated if a single consumer's case becomes a class-action lawsuit, and the stakes increase.
Kaliel thinks the work is worth it when companies pay money to consumers who have been wronged and make changes based on what they've learned from a successful civil proceeding.
Philanthropy and Giving to Charity
In his career as a lawyer, Kaliel has worked with different nonprofits to fight for the truth and set up the kind of financial sting that often leads to big changes. He is most proud of his work with the National Consumers League, Compassion over Killing, and different human societies. These groups fought for the truth on food and animal product labels through the courts.
Awards
Because of what he had done, Kaliel was named one of Washington, D.C. Rising Stars Super Lawyers in 2015. The magazine Super Lawyers uses many criteria to choose its honorees, making the award a real honor.
Interests and hobbies of the person
Jeff Kaliel likes to spend time with his family exploring the D.C. area and the countryside around it when he is not working as a lawyer.
